our individual stories weave intricate patterns of triumph, resilience, and profound connections. As I reflect on my son Tags’ final college football game, played on a poignant Veterans Day, the chapters of our journey unfold, revealing the multifaceted narrative of a father and his son. This narrative traverses the treacherous terrain of single parenthood, addiction recovery, financial instability, and the transformative power of familial bonds.
Our story begins in the stark shadows of a painful departure, a breaking free from what I can only describe as a form of modern-day enslavement from a person who was supposed to be my aunt. Leaving behind a family entangled in lies, and ensnared by violence. I left to end up in a new relationship that was ensnared by the clutches of meth addictions for both of us. We were both sick with addiction. Then she left, and that marked the inception of a journey toward self-discovery and redemption. This odyssey was fraught with the demons of addiction, the wreckage of a fractured family, and the struggle to find solid ground amid the tumultuous seas of change.
The scars of my past became the canvas upon which Tags and I embarked on a journey of growth, resilience, and triumph over adversity. It’s a narrative that encapsulates the intricate dance of single parenthood, the tumultuous road to recovery, and the daily struggles of raising a family in the face of relentless challenges.
Last Saturday, November 11, 2023, as I stood in the West End Zone, watching Tags’ final college game, memories surged—a collage of conversations, confessions, and an unspoken understanding that had grown between us over the years. Tags, unbeknownst to me, had carried the weight of a truth he discovered about his mother leaving. It was a truth I had shielded him from, a truth he shared with his brothers, and a truth that, when unveiled, revealed an unspoken bond of trust, understanding, and appreciation for my efforts as a father.
It was during these challenging times that I had, in an effort to protect my family’s image, told everyone that I had thrown his mother out. However, the truth was that she had left. This revelation added an additional layer of complexity to our narrative, underscoring the struggles we faced not only externally but also within the confines of our own home. I discovered over the past few weeks that not only did Tags know but he had also informed his brothers. Allowing them to understand I did not take them from her, she left.
To all single parents, irrespective of gender, I offer a piece of humble advice—tell your children the truth. They are not just witnesses to your journey but essential allies in your transformation. While the truth may be uncomfortable, embarrassing, or painful, it serves as the bridge to understanding and healing.
The real story is how we made it here. Our journey was far from ordinary. In the aftermath of the upheaval of his mother, I made a pact with my oldest son, Tags, a deal forged in the crucible of adversity. He was tasked with growing up faster than his peers, sacrificing personal desires, and becoming a partner in parenting his three younger brothers. In return, I pledged unwavering support for his passion: football. Little did we comprehend that this seemingly straightforward pact would shape not only Tags’ high school and college football career but also serve as a catalyst for my own transformation.
As a single parent navigating the labyrinthine corridors of addiction recovery, financial instability, and the daily tumult of parenthood, Tags emerged as my anchor. His commitment to football became more than a pursuit of passion; it became a metaphor for our shared determination to rise above circumstances, to surmount the hurdles that life threw our way.
Living in a trailer with heat only in one room, grappling with financial hardships, and confronting personal demons, our journey was marked by humble beginnings. In those unassuming surroundings, Tags became an unwitting participant in the process of raising not just his younger brothers but, in essence, helping to raise me. His dedication to football became emblematic of our collective resolve to transcend circumstances, to overcome the adversities that life hurled at us.
As Tags played his final college game on Veterans Day, the significance of the occasion resonated deeply. Tags’ childhood friend, who is an active-duty veteran and his father, a retired Veteran joined us at his final game, the timing added an additional layer of gratitude. We even had an open chair adorned with a Jamal Anderson jersey—an homage to his friend’s grandfather who was also a Veteran and friend of mine. There were 3 generations with us in the west end zone. We not only celebrated personal victories but also paid tribute to the sacrifices of veterans who have served their country.
Our story may not be unique, but it stands as a testament to the resilience embedded within each of us. He made it. The deal was made and the mission was accomplished many years later. The path from adversity to triumph is strewn with challenges, yet with honesty, determination, and the unwavering support of those we love, we can surmount anything.
In the silent echoes of our past, a victory unfolds that stretches far beyond the confines of a football field. It is a victory over the demons of addiction, a triumph over the challenges of single parenthood, and a celebration of the unbreakable bond between a father and his son. To all Veterans, thank you for your service and your sacrifices. And to the single parents out there, I extend my deepest gratitude for your sacrifices, resilience, and indomitable spirit. Your journey is a testament to the human capacity for transformation, and you’ve got this.
In navigating the depths of darkness, our story becomes a beacon of hope, illuminating the path for those who find themselves in the labyrinth of adversity. It’s a testament to the transformative power of familial bonds, the unyielding spirit of single parenthood, and the enduring strength found within the human soul. As Tags’ final college football game becomes a chapter in the book of our lives, it serves as a poignant reminder that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, redemption and triumph are not just attainable—they are inevitable.
"Stay blessed, stay true to yourself, and always remember, you’re never alone on this incredible journey. Wishing you an abundance of peace, love, and an overflow of good vibes until our paths cross again. Thanks for being a part of this adventure with me. Until next time, Deuces!"
