the commencement of the NFL season has always been a significant occasion for me. I’ve spent countless Sundays glued to the television screen, watching my beloved Las Vegas Raiders battle it out on the gridiron. Whether they were the Oakland, LA, almost Irvine Raiders, then back to Oakland and now the Las Vegas Raiders, I have ALWAYS been a fan. But today, as I sit here eagerly awaiting the start of the NFL season, I’m reminded of a funny and ironic moment that has stayed with me over the years.
Tonight, the Detroit Lions will be facing off against the Kansas City Chiefs. And since the first game will include the Detroit Lions, it brings back an unforgettable memory. You see, I’m a die-hard Raiders fan through and through, but on one fateful day, I found myself dressed head to toe in Detroit Lions gear, all in the name of supporting my friends, who happened to be die-hard Lions fans.
Now, let me set the stage for you. It was a crisp autumn day in Detroit, and the city was buzzing with football fever. The Lions were set to take on their division rivals, the Minnesota Vikings, in what promised to be a thrilling matchup. I had always had a soft spot for the Lions, thanks in no small part to the legendary Barry Sanders. His electrifying runs had captured the hearts of football fans everywhere, including mine.
When my friends extended an invitation to join them at the game, I hesitated for a moment. After all, my loyalty to the Raiders was unwavering, but the prospect of spending a day with good friends and enjoying the game-day experience in a different city was too enticing to pass up. So, with a good-natured grin and a healthy dose of irony, I agreed to wear Lions gear and cheer for the home team.
As game day dawned, I donned the Honolulu blue and silver of the Lions—a far cry from the iconic silver and black of the Raiders. I felt like a double agent, infiltrating enemy territory, but in reality, I was just a friend showing support. Little did I know that this day would lead to an encounter that would become one of my most cherished football stories.
We made our way to the stadium, and the atmosphere was electric. The energy of the fans, the aroma of tailgate barbecues, and the anticipation of the game created an intoxicating blend that was impossible to resist. My friends, true Lions loyalists, were in their element, and I was their honorary member for the day.
As we settled into our seats, the roar of the crowd washed over us. The Vikings were in town, and the fans were ready to defend their turf. I couldn’t help but get caught up in the excitement, even though my heart secretly yearned for the Raiders to be on that field.
But little did I know that the highlight of the day was yet to come, as the Lions did not win that day. For a little excitement after the game, we decided to find the bus John Madden traveled in. As we approached the bus, I did not really think we would even see him.
Looking up at the bus, I was met with a sight that sent shivers down my spine. There, just a few feet away, stood the legendary John Madden. The man whose name had become synonymous with football, both as a coach and a broadcaster, was right in front of me. I was starstruck, to say the least.
But there was a catch. I was decked out in Lions gear. I was the living embodiment of a Lions fan, and here I was, standing in the presence of a football icon, while I was actually a die-hard Raiders fan.
I found myself making eye contact with him. It was a moment I had never expected, and I was torn between wanting to say something, anything, and the realization that my allegiance lay elsewhere. The irony of the situation was not lost on me, and it was almost embarrassing.
Then, out of nowhere, one of the people I was with couldn’t contain their excitement and shouted, “Hi Coach!” My heart sank as I instinctively shushed them, desperately hoping not to draw any attention to myself. After all, I was incognito as a Lions fan for the day to support my friends.
To my immense relief, Madden continued onto the bus. I breathed a sigh of relief, but the memory of that encounter has stayed with me ever since. It was a surreal moment—a Raiders fan standing mere feet away from one of football’s greatest figures while appearing as a fan of another team.
As I sit here, eagerly awaiting the kickoff of another NFL season, I can’t help but reflect on that unforgettable day. It serves as a reminder that football has a unique way of bringing people together, even when circumstances challenge our allegiances. It underscores the power of the sport to create enduring connections among fans, regardless of the team they support.
So, as I prepare to watch my beloved Raiders take the field and embark on another thrilling season, I’ll hold onto the memory of that day when I wore Lions gear and shared a silent moment with the legendary John Madden. It’s a story that adds an extra layer of depth to my football fandom and reminds me that in the world of football, surprises are always just around the corner.
Hey Charlie and Tom, I do hope your Lions do well this season, as I am a huge Amon-Ra St. Brown fan. However, I will not be wearing the Honolulu Blue. You will find me in my black and silver all season. For an extra dose of irony today, I do have to root for the Chiefs tonight, as Mahomes is starting on 5 of my Fantasy football teams. I will leave you with a Go Raiders.
Thank you for your time. Blessed be, God bless and Peace. Deuces.
"Stay blessed, stay true to yourself, and always remember, you’re never alone on this incredible journey. Wishing you an abundance of peace, love, and an overflow of good vibes until our paths cross again. Thanks for being a part of this adventure with me. Until next time, Deuces!"
